Petrocoke Ash or Petroleum Coke Ash and Its Complete Know-how:

Petroleum Coke Ash is a byproduct of the Coke refinery process which upgrades fuel oil by heating it and cracking it to higher valued gasoline, jet and diesel components. Generally there is lower moisture and lower volatiles than petroleum coke resulting in a higher heating value, on the order of 10,000 Btu/lb. There is generally higher sulfur, ranging from about 4 % to 7 %, while the HGI varies from 35 to 75. Most coke produced is fuel grade, meaning it competes with coal.

How does Fuel Grade Coke compare economically to Coal?

Production costs associated with petcoke are minimal because it is a byproduct of the refining process, and prices are generally determined by the competitive steam coal price. Pricing is also generally discounted to compensate for sulfur, HGI and the extra difficulties of the end user managing both coal and coke inputs. Historical $/ BTU prices of delivered coke vs coal in India show coke running about 75% of steam coal, but there is a lot of variation.

Cement industry to use petcoke ash  as cheaper alternative to coal. In a quest for a cheaper alternative to coal, the National Council for Cement and Building Materials and Cement Manufacturers’ Association has decided to promote the use of petcoke ash in the cement industry after evaluating several international and domestic experiences.

How to Use Petcoke Ash?

Petcoke Ash provides scope for manufacturing higher grade of cement with the same raw material or same grade of cement using marginal and low grade limestone contributing to resource conservation. Due to higher calorific value compared to coal, less quantity of petcoke needs to be moved from source to plant site, which reduces the cost of transport. However, as the sulphur content in petcoke is high, its larger use increases the sulphur cycle and aggravates build-up formation in the kiln system. The total sulphur content in the clinker needs to be maintained below 2 per cent from product quality point of view. For promoting use of petcoke in the cement industry, there is, therefore, a need for changes in raw mix design and finess of fuel and modifications in burner, calciner and cooler so that a trouble-free and cost effective operation is achieved.
